A READING FROM LUKE
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
MESSAGE IN A PARAGRAPH OR TWO
When Jesus used the word anointed, it means that he was claiming to be the Messiah. The Messiah is bringing good news. The good news is coming to people who rarely, of ever, hear good news. They are the poor, the captives, blind, and oppressed.
Who, these days, are among the poor, captive, blind, and oppressed?
Have we been told that any of those people are the problem, or lazy, or thugs. And who of those, anywhere in the world are ignored by those who have plenty?
Those of us baptized into Christ are called to share the Good News. And that especially includes the poor, the captive, the blind, and the oppressed.
